The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is funded by the federal government and provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to kids in public & non-profit private schools as well as residential child care institutions. NSLP was founded under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946. NSLP operates in more than 101,000 schools across the United States and provided nutritious meals to over 31 million children each school day in 2009. Public & non-profit private schools enroll in the NSLP program and receive cash subsidies for each lunch served from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). School lunches served must meet some health requirements such as they must contain Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium calories.
