In this article, we build from the information provided on Free Government Grants for Single Moms. While there are no "direct" federal grants for single mothers, the US government funds & runs various charitable organizations that provide nutritional support for single moms, healthcare discounts, food programs, school lunch programs, etc.

The WIC foundation provides supplemental foods, health care options & nutrition education for single moms and low income pregnant mothers. The target population for the WIC program are:

- Low income pregnant women
- Breastfeeding women (up to the 1st year of the child)
- Infants (up to the 1st year).
- Children (up to their 5th birthday).

Participants who are eligible for WIC program receive supplemental nutritious foods for a healthy life, nutrition education & counseling at various WIC offices throughout the country & screening for other health & social services. For eligibility requirements of WIC program, visit this link http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/howtoapply/eligibilityrequirements.htm

To apply for WIC program, you need to set up an appointment and meet with a WIC counselor in person. The federal government in conjunction with State governments have stepped up to offer Medicaid & Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). These programs are meant to help single moms who cannot afford regular health insurance on the private market. As a basic rule of thumb, a single mom or her entire family's income should not exceed $44,100 in order to be eligible for health insurance. Each state has its own income limitations so be sure to check with your State's local office. Medicaid and CHIP together served more than 35 million children in 2008.

Medicaid & Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) cover the following important areas of a child's health:

- Doctor visits
- Prescription medicines
- Immunizations
- Special care for children with disability
- Hospitalization fees

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is funded by the federal government and provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to kids in public & non-profit private schools as well as residential child care institutions. NSLP was founded under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946. NSLP operates in more than 101,000 schools across the United States and provided nutritious meals to over 31 million children each school day in 2009.

Public & non-profit private schools enroll in the NSLP program and receive cash subsidies for each lunch served from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). School lunches served must meet some health requirements such as they must contain Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium calories. So how does the program decide which kids get free meals and which ones get priced meals at discounts?

From the NSLP's factsheet http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/lunch/AboutLunch/NSLPFactSheet.pdf

Children from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty level are eligible for free meals. Those with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level are eligible for reduced-price meals, for which students can be charged no more than 40 cents.
