Applying for Food Stamps for Single Moms

A single mom has many responsibilities on her shoulder including providing housing, food, medicine & transportation for her kids. With rising commodity prices, groceries are getting expensive and single moms are looking to the government for financial aid. Depending on your annual income & size of your family, you may be eligible for government food stamps. Government sponsored food stamp programs help single mothers with low incomes to buy food necessary for a healthy living & proper nurturing of their children. To be eligible to receive food stamps, single moms must meet income requirements and be a US citizen, national or a qualified alien. Also, she must have a Social Security Number.

As a general rule of thumb, your household cannot have more than $2,000 in resources to qualify for food stamps. However, if your household has a person who is disabled or above 60 years, then the limit is $3,000. Resources that single moms receive from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or social security benefits are not counted towards the food stamps program. In other words, you can receive food stamps & TANF benefits at the same time.
